New World IPA

American IPA

The history of the American IPA began in the 1970s and 80s, when American home brewers revived the nearly obsolete English style. They transformed it into a hop-forward brew, emphasizing citrusy and tropical fruit notes through heavy dry-hopping, resulting in a soft mouthfeel. With the release of Anchor Liberty Ale in 1975, American brewers officially established this distinct style.
